DIY Organic Beauty Hacks

Let’s be real: beauty and skincare products can pricey, especially if you have your heart set on organic ingredients. Before you let your wallet take a hit, try out these six homemade, organic beauty treatments. We’re willing to bet at least one of them will find a permanent place in your beauty routine.

1. Treat Tough Spots with Tea Tree Oil

Chances are you’ve heard about the wonders of tea tree oil before. It’s a natural antibacterial, which means it’s a perfect way to fight off blemishes and acne. It smells great, too.

How to use it: Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a cotton swab and rub it over problem areas. Make this part of your nighttime routine so you wake up with better skin.

2. Pamper Your Skin with a Banana-Based Body Scrub

Exfoliate with this all-natural banana and brown sugar body scrub that leaves your skin moisturized and nourished.

How to use it: Add one cup of organic brown sugar to three mashed brown bananas. Use a fork to combine. Don’t worry about leftover chunks —the consistency should be thick. (Hat tip to Brit + Co for this recipe!)

Once you have your magical scrub ready to go, give it a whirl. Wet your skin in the shower with warm water. Pause the running water so you can exfoliate by applying the sugar scrub in a circular motion. Rinse the scrub off with warm water when finished.

3. Try Out a Honey Face Mask

We swear by our organic facial masks, but we get it. Sometimes you need to pamper yourself at home, and a honey face mask is the perfect stop gap between spa days. Like tea tree oil, honey is also a natural antibacterial that helps fight acne and treat scars.

How to use it: Rub a thin layer of raw, organic honey over your face. Let the mask sit for about 10 minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water. It will leave your skin smooth, soft, and glowing.

4. Revive Your Tresses with Coconut Oil

Split ends? Fried strands? Damaged locks? Repair your hair with two easy, organic ingredients: coconut oil and honey.

The coconut oil keeps your hair soft, moist, and resilient, which helps prevent further breakage, while the honey intensifies your hair’s natural luster. It’s truly a winning combo.

How to use it: Combine one tablespoon of coconut oil with one tablespoon of honey in a pot. Heat on the stove until the coconut oil is melted (it doesn’t take much heat at all, so use a low heat setting). Transfer the treatment to a bowl and apply it to your hair starting at the roots and working your way down to the ends. Cover your tresses with a shower cap, and let the treatment sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your hair clean.

5. Tap Beets for the Perfect Berry-Tinted Pout

The flawless fall hue for your lips may come from an unexpected source: beets. We’ve tried berry-based DIY lip tints before, but we’ve found beets give the best color payoff and work for all skin colors.

How to use it: Peel one beet and chop it up. Combine the beet bits in a food processor with four tablespoons of olive oil and two tablespoons of honey. Blend the ingredients together until smooth, and then transfer to a storage container.

Apply the tint to your lips for a natural splash of color. Store it in your fridge for future use – it will be good for one month.
